DEFERRARI+MODESTI was founded in Florence by Javier Deferrari and Lavinia Modesti.

Since 2010, we have been engaged in architectural and interior design, focusing our research research on the creation of residential, commercial, exhibition, and hospitality spaces.

Before establishing the studio, we gained various experiences in Italy and abroad, including collaborations with Enzo Mari, Manuel Gausa, and finally with Stefano Boeri and Giovanni La Varra.

They develop projects of different scales and types, each time creating a unique concept with its own distinct poetics for both private clients and important institutions and companies including Le Gallerie degli Uffizi, Museo Archeologico di Firenze, Exenia, Targetti Sankey, Resort Castelfalfi, Castello di Banfi, Ceramiche Marca Corona, Mirage.

Over the years we have received national and international Awards and our projects have appeared in numerous publications including AD, Abitare, Dezeen, Domus, Elle Decor, Frame, Living and Wallpaper.

Since 2017, we have held the roles of academic coordinators and lectures for the Bachelor's Degree course in Interior Design at IED Florence.

How we work

We design spaces where people can feel at ease. Fundamental to this is a careful study of the characteristics of the place where we will be working and a deep understanding of how the space will be used and experienced. Our approach, therefore, is inclusive and promotes an active dialogue with our clients, consultants, and collaborators.

We always try to see the design process as a whole, but also in every detail. We try to have a broad and at the same time focused view, developing a project as in a spiral, we move forward and then go back widening the view. A strategy that requires an analytical, pragmatic but also poetic approach.

We consider materials, form, color, and light as architectural elements to be used and combined to create a space that stands the test of time. This requires meticulous attention to detail, research and use of materials, and the functionality of the spaces. To achieve a harmonious interaction between the architecture and the interior elements, we often design custom furnishings and lighting.

We carefully study every technical detail, with the aim of achieving a space that is coherent in its various parts.
We meticulously oversee the material sampling process, working closely with artisan companies to identify the most suitable solutions.
