ARCADIA E APOCALISSE

The exhibition aims to explore how the landscape has been perceived and depicted artistically from 1850 to the present day, highlighting changes in aesthetics and representational conventions while also seeking to raise visitors’ awareness of the issue of environmental degradation.

Through a comprehensive narrative that draws on paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, photography, and new media—from the mid-19th century to the present—the exhibition revolves around creative thinking about the landscape, a genre of painting inherited from the 18th century as a reflection of nature in art, in contrast to mythological and historical painting. It breaks free from its stereotypes without, however, disappearing, thanks to the landscape’s inherent ability to profoundly renew its own meanings and representational codes, reflecting the radical transformations of Italian artistic culture and society as a whole.
